Rights groups snub Sri Lanka's 'flawed' war probe
afp, oct 14. NEW YORK — International human rights groups declined on Thursday to appear before a Sri Lankan probe into the end of the country's civil war, saying the procedure was flawed and lacked credibility.

New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW), London-based Amnesty International and Brussels-based International Crisis Group (ICG) snubbed an invitation to testify before Sri Lanka's Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC).

"There is little to be gained by appearing before such a fundamentally flawed commission," said HRW's Executive Director Kenneth Roth in a statement. More... Discuss this story

Sri Lanka Catholic bishops call for release of jailed opposition leader - Ekklesia, 2010-10-14 03:16:58 EST. The Roman Catholic Church in Sri Lanka has joined demands for the release of opposition leader Sarath Fonseka, the former Sri Lankan army chief.

Fonseka is in prison after being found guilty by a court martial of corruption.

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of Sri Lanka, in a 7 October 2010 statement, made an "appeal for the release" of Fonseka, who led the Sri Lankan army to victory in 2009 against Tamil rebels who led a 26-year-autonomy campaign.

"We are making this appeal purely on humanitarian grounds," Catholic Archbishop Malcolm Ranjith of Colombo told ENInews. More...Discuss this story

Sri Lankans Detained in Thailand Face Deportation - Voice of America, 2010-10-14 17:57:38 EST. Thai authorities have arrested more than 100 Sri Lankan Tamils this week because of fears they might be taken illegally to destinations such as Canada and Australia. Those arrested are being held in an immigration detention center and face court proceedings for immigration violations. South Asian diplomatic sources say Thai authorities made the arrests because of a growing number of Sri Lankan Tamils arriving on tourist visas.
