S Lankan trade union threatens to join student union protests - Daily Times, 2010-10-31 02:32:04 EST. COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s National Trade Union Centre (NTUC) while condemning the arrest of Inter University Student Federation (IUSF) Convener, Udul Premaratna warned that the trade unions would join the students in their campaign, reported the Colombo Page. NTUC President and JVP politburo member, KD Lalkantha said that if the government continued in its suppressive actions against the university students, the working masses would be compelled to join the university students to help win their demands. Kenney stiffens resolve on smuggling following arrest of Tamil migrants in ... - Vancouver Sun, 2010-10-31 02:03:08 EST. The arrest Friday in Thailand of scores of Canada-bound migrants from Sri Lanka has stiffened the Conservative government's resolve to dig in against demands to soften legislation that would punish asylum-seekers who pay smugglers to get them here, says Immigration Minister Jason Kenney. Kenney said he was advised by intelligence sources the arrests involved 114 Sri Lankans "planning to be smuggled to Canada."
