Sri Lanka bishop accuses forces over missing priests - BBC News, 2010-11-03 22:14:58 EST. At least two Roman Catholic priests have gone missing in Sri Lanka in the past four years, the church says.

Kingsley Swampillai, the bishop of Trincomalee and Batticaloa, said one of the priests vanished after security forces took him in for questioning.

Bishop Swampillai and his colleagues were testifying before a commission looking into the country's civil war.

It ended last year when troops defeated Tamil Tiger rebels, who had been fighting for a separate state. More...Discuss this story

Tamil parties join to help solve problems
xinhua, Nov 4. A group of Tamil political parties are trying to achieve consensus on the need to resolve problems of the minority community in Sri Lanka.

M.K. Shivajilingam a leading member of the 10-party Tamil political alliance said Wednesday they had a useful discussion.

"We will next have talks with the Tamil National Alliance(TNA). All parties are keen to reach an agreement on the basic problems of the Tamils", Shivajilingam said.

The TNA is the main party for the Tamil minority but faced accusations of being a proxy of the once powerful rebel group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). More...Discuss this story

Colombo, Nov 3 (DPA) A newly appointed Catholic cardinal called Wednesday on the Sri Lankan government to speed up a search for a political solution to the country's long-standing ethnic tensions, which led to a 26-year military conflict.

Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, testifying before a commission investigating alleged war crimes committed at the end of the conflict, said that although the fighting between the government and Tamil separatist rebels has ended, only a political solution would help to fully resolve the conflict.
