Lechchmi, told Al-Jazeera her employers had driven 14 nails into her body when she asked for her salary after six months of work. "The master of the house held me down, while the mistress gave him the metal pins to put into my hands and legs," said 38-year-old Lechchmi, who had obtained her job abroad through an employment agency. "I endured the pain in silence because I thought I may be killed if I struggled."

Sri Lankan president to be sworn in for second term; opponents boycott - CNN International
google.com, 2010-11-18 04:16:35 EST. Colombo, Sri Lanka (CNN) -- Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa is slated to be sworn in Thursday for a second six-year term at a nationally televised ceremony outside Colombo's presidential secretariat overlooking the Indian Ocean.

Bhutan's Prime Minister, Jigme Thinley, who heads the South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation (SAARC), will be the guest of honor. Most other member countries of the regional grouping are sending special envoys for the event, an External Affairs Ministry official said.

Fonseka admitted to prison hospital after breathing problems
The Hindustan Times, 2010-11-17 11:05:39 EST. Jailed former Sri Lankan army chief Sarath Fonseka was rushed to a prison hospital in Colombo on Tuesday night after he complained of breathing problems and wheezing. Fonseka, targeted by the Tamil Tigers more than once, has multiple shrapnel still embedded in his body. And he developed breathing problems after an attack by a Liberation Tiger of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) suicide bomber nearly left him dead.

Though Fonseka’s condition had stabilised, doctors had kept him under observation, Tiran Alles, MP and chairman of the Fonseka-led Democratic National Alliance told HT after visiting the former general. More...Discuss this story
