Sri Lanka to resettle displaced persons by year end
TOI, Dec 7. CHENNAI: Sri Lanka has reaffirmed its commitment to resettle most of the Internally Displayed Persons (IDPs), numbering around 16000-17000 in camps, before the end of 2010, said minister of external affairs S M Krishna on Monday. Replying to chief minister M Karunanidhi's November 24th letter, Krishna said he had urged the Sri Lankan President to begin a structured dialogue with the Tamil and other communities with a view to finding a permanent settlement. "India's substantial assistance for the resettlement of the IDPs and the rehabilitation of northern and eastern Sri Lanka has been greatly appreciated by the people of the region. India will do whatever possible to ensure a peaceful and dignified life for the IDPs," said the minister. More...

Sri Lanka to prosecute public officials over spread of dengue - MSN India, 2010-12-06 16:49:08 EST. Colombo, Dec 6 (PTI) Sri Lanka''s health ministry today warned top officials that they will be prosecuted unless they stopped mosquito breeding on their premises as 230 dengue deaths were reported this year.

Health minister Maithripala Sirisena said he instructed the National Dengue Control Programme to initiate legal action against heads of state institutions who maintained mosquito breeding areas.

‘German Bakery blast accused was trained to assemble explosives in Colombo’
The Hindu, 2010-12-06 21:55:00 EST. The alleged mastermind of the February 13 German Bakery attack, Himayat Baig, was trained to assemble explosives in Colombo by two of the co-accused in the case when they visited the Sri Lankan capital in March 2008, the Maharashtra ATS has contended in the chargesheet submitted to the Judicial Magistrate in Pune.

A copy of the 2500-page chargesheet, which was filed by the ATS in the court of Judicial Magistrate S. Bose on Saturday, was handed over to Baig who was produced in the court on Monday. More...Discuss this story
